Below you see our understanding and definition of the specific game features. We are however aware that this is not a complete universal language, as it can be understood​ differently from person to person. The definitions will be updated regularly. If you have any suggestion or contributions, please write to us!

  • Online: When a program is connected to an internet source

  • Offline(Local): When a program is not connected to an internet source and is instead fully downloaded to a device

  • Single Player: Only one player is involved

  • Multiplayer: Multiple players are involved

  • Coop: Cooperative play between players for a shared purpose

  • Team VS Team: Cooperative Team versus another cooperative Team.

  • Synchronous: A simultaneous interaction between players

  • Asynchronous: An indirect interaction between players

  • Symmetric: Example - Facebook social relationships are symmetric: I ask to be your friend and you must agree in turn for the relationship to exist

  • Asymmetric: Example - Twitter social relationships are asymmetric: I can "follow" anyone I want, without their reciprocation

  • Interaction with actor: An actor is an entity that exists within the game world and that can interact with the elements of the game world, and with other actors. The mechanism of interaction is fixed by means of the rules of the game.

  • Interaction with player: A player is an actor whose movements are performed by human players.

  • Interaction with agent (BOT): An agent is an actor whose movements are performed by a virtual player, for example a specialized software, typically driven by AI.

  • Mobile: Referred to when a game is played on a mobile device, for example IOS

  • Console: Referred to when a game is played on a console device, for example Playstation or Xbox   

  • PC: Referred to when a game is played on a PC system, for example Windows or Apple OS

  • Chat-function: The function in which two or more players are messaging

  • GameCenter:  An official online market which consists of game titles, for example AppStore or GooglePlay

  • MMORPG: Stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game and refers to game genre

  • UML: Stands for Unified Modelling Language and used for the diagram construction  

  • DBR: Stands for Design Based Research and used as method in the framework   

  • SPT: Stands for Social Presence Theory and used as theory in the framework    

  • UIM: Stands for User Innovation Management and used as an extension to the framework

  • Intermittent Internet: When an internet connection ceases and begins again.     

  • Friends: Persons that you already know, whom have actively invited you, or you have invited, to play the game.

  • Strangers: Persons you do not know or have any relations to. 

  • Turn based: Players or agents take turns interacting    

  • Dyads: A pair or a group consisting of only two people

  • Spectator: An observer who is spectating another player     

  • Split-screen: A shared screen gets split up into two or more equal-sized windows.
